The new office of IBM was inaugurated here on Monday by Managing Director of EISAI Pharma Sanjit Lamba.
The office was opened as part of the company's expansion to increase its presence in key growth markets. With this, the number of branches opened this year by IBM in India has gone up to six. The company has plans to increase its presence by establishing branches in over 40 cities across India/South Asia by 2013.
An IBM release stated that Visakhapatnam was an important port city in South India. It had experienced rapid economic growth in recent years due to the development of petroleum, steel, fertilizer and IT industries.
IBM has been present in the city since 2007 through its global delivery centre that provides IBM services to clients around the world. The opening of the new branch office here is expected to give a boost to IBM's business in the region enabling it to strengthen its relationship with clients and partners and provide solutions and services in high growth areas such as information management, IT security, cloud computing and business analytics.
“Companies and governments in regional cities are looking to IT as a way to drive innovation. Small and medium enterprises play a key role in regional development,'' said Nipun Mehrotra, Vice-President, General Business, Geographic Expansion, IBM India/South Asia.
“Visakhapatnam is an important city for IBM. By increasing our local presence here, we are providing advanced IT solutions and services to all segments of the economy,'' he said.
Training programme
A four-day training programme on IBM Tivoli Directory Server (TDS) for computer science and engineering students of GITAM University commenced here on Monday.
Inaugurating the programme Registrar M. Potharaju said IBM, as part of a MoU with the university, established its Centre of Excellence at the university which was a good initiative in IT education. He hoped that the IBM programme would allow a student to access multiple technology and product streams and make him or her industry-ready with an international certificate.
HoD of Computer Science Engineering G. Apparao said the real capacity and capability enhancement for students was when they were required to apply their skills during the projects in IT related industry.
The IBM training would help students to acquire practical industry-relevant skills by the time they passed out, he said.
IBM resource person Rama Shankar said the IBM TDS was a powerful and authoritative enterprise directory infrastructure and was a critical enabler for enterprise security.
GITAM Institute of Technology's principal in-charge M.R.S. Satyanarayana was participated.
