Timely intervention of the district administration helped ensure minimal loss of life due to cyclone Hudhud, but nothing could be done to stop loss of livelihood. The secondary effects of the cyclone were many and included lots of complexities.
“High-level decision making is required to be able to provide alternative livelihoods to the victims during the time taken to restore their original livelihoods,” Prashant Pradhan of IBM said in Visakhapatnam on Friday.
The IBM took the initiative to study the destruction and plan a solution for developing a resilient Vizag, he said.
“We visited the damaged structures and interacted with people to understand the complexities in finding a lasting solution. There is a need to map the resources of the location to be able to give an appropriate and location-specific solution to the problem,” he pointed out.
The IBM also developed a package that could generate a model on how a disaster could affect different places. This would help develop a more resilient city, he explained.
