The third and final day of the Vizag Fashion Week on Sunday was cancelled due to protest against the event from certain sections of society. A case was filled against the organisers by secretary of city unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad Radha Krishna, under Section 295A of the IPC after some of the dresses showcased by James Ferreira, a Mumbai-based designer, had images of Lord Vinayaka on it.
Speaking to The Hindu over the phone designer James Ferreira said "In the history of fashion there have been a number of times that images of gods and goddesses have been used on clothes. I don't know why people are objecting to it as there is absolutely no vulgarity portrayed.It is tragic and I feel really bad for the country that such a situation has arisen. I had showcased the same collection in New Delhi last year and it was well received." He adds; "It was not my intention to hurt any sentiments. I can't believe this has happened.” James says an Internet search about the use of images of gods and goddesses throws up so many collections. Why is his collection being targeted when it has been done before, he asks?
Designer Jules Idi Amin, commenting on the protests being carried out by women organisations, said "I am a woman and designing clothes is a creative pursuit. I would request those who are opposed to the show to concentrate on a number of serious social issues that women face everyday instead of trying to stop the fashion week." The first two days of the fashion week saw a good turnout and showcased some beautiful designs. A collection for both men and women designed by Riyaz and Reshma Gangji suited to be worn at resort weddings was a hit with the crowd. Vizag being a dream destination for destination weddings will definitely see brides and grooms being inspired by the collection. Jules Idi Amin’s show was influenced by a Spanish holiday in which red was the predominant colour and her models draped their saris innovatively. The final show was by designer Rocky S. His show created a party atmosphere with models showcasing party wear mostly in black embellished with sequins. Rocky S. also announced his plan to launch a store in the city.
