The Hindustan Shipyard Limited has created history of sorts by delivering giant-size rig Sagar Ratna to ONGC after completing overhauling.

The overhauling estimated to have been done at a cost of Rs.500 crore after bagging the contract in a competitive bidding. HSL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Rear Admiral N.K. Mishra handed over the jack up rig at a function here on Saturday to his counterpart in ONGC Sudhir Vasudeva.

The oil rig is a cantilever type non-propelled self-elevating drilling unit for the maximum operating water depth of 300 feet and drilling depth of 20,000 feet. The unit is equipped with three triangular truss legs with spud tank at each corner of the hull. One main deck, three jack houses, derrick, cantilever beams, pipe rack, cranes quarter and heliport are arranged.

The heliport is designed to accommodate a Sikorsky S-61 and MI-8 type helicopter. The rig has been repaired under the classification of American Bureau of Shipping and IRS.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Vasudeva thanked HSL for all the efforts put in to repair, modernise and deliver the jack up rig. He said the capabilities of HSL and the requirement of ONGC could be synergised to form a fruitful joint venture on the Eastern Coast.

Rear Admiral Mishra highlighted the close cooperation that existed between HSL and ONGC for several decades in the field of construction and repair of offshore assets of ONGC. He hoped that with the delivery of Sagar Ratna, the cooperation between the two companies would grow further.

Her said being the only major shipyard on the East Coast, HSL was poised to undertake complex repairs of sophisticated high-tech marine assets. He also lauded the hard work and dedication of HSL employees and ONGC personnel involved in overhauling Sagar Ratna.
