HPCL blast toll rises to 26

The toll in the HPCL cooling tower blast mounted to 26 with one more injured person succumbing to the burns on Tuesday.

Contract worker – K. Ramana, 28 – died at Seven Hills Hospital here while undergoing treatment. Except one all those died so far were contract workers. The condition of one patient undergoing treatment at National Burns Centre in Mumbai was stated to be critical.

The August 23 blast killed two on the first day and subsequently others succumbed to burns. Currently 14 were at various hospitals – seven in the city and another seven in Mumbai.

A HPCL spokesman said the shifting of 75 per cent of debris from the accident site was over. The compensation amount of Rs. 20 lakh for the deceased was handed over to the District Collector. With this, Rs. 5 crore has been handed over to the district authorities.
