House surgeons of King George Hospital, the teaching hospital of Andhra Medical College, like their counterparts in other government general hospitals attached to the medical colleges in the State, are urging the authorities to let them learn the basic procedures and skills of treating patients during their internship than doing chores such as preparing sample bottles, giving injections to the patients, taking samples to the lab and getting back reports and getting blood sachets, among others.
Waiting for three months after sounding their problem to the authorities, the house surgeons decided to stage a protest on the hospitals’ premises on Monday.
If the authorities failed to respond to their grievance, the house surgeons would go on a strike State-wide, they said. About 150 house surgeons staged a demonstration on the premises of KGH wearing black badges and later met Superintendent of KGH. They are also planning to meet the Director of Medical Education later, coordinator of house surgeons of AU Junior Doctors Association K. Trinadh said.
Later Superintendent of KGH M. Madhusudhana Babu said all their problems are being sorted out and I am holding a meeting with them tomorrow afternoon,” Dr. Madhusudhana Babu said.
