Hopes again for electronics project

98-acre site near Pendurthi has been identified for the cluster

January 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:54 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

A fresh initiative has been launched to offer the Centre an alternative site to revive Electronic Manufacturing Cluster project to make the city a mega electronics hub.

The Department of Electronics and IT (DeitY), under the Ministry of Communications and IT, stated last year that AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) application for EMC had been withdrawn.

The reason for shelving the proposal was that the officials from DeitY were not happy with 100 acres offered to them at Jagannadhapuram village near Parawada due to location of a hillock and Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City.

“As part of the new electronics policy, Vizag will be made a mega electronic hub. Establishment of EMC will bring a lot of investments in electronics units. Hence, we have made a fresh proposal after identifying 98 acres close to highway at Gurrampalem near Pendurthi,” APIIC Executive Director V. Raghunath told The Hindu on Wednesday.

Logistic support

As part of the new policy, two EMCs will be set up in Vizag in addition to an electronics bazaar. Vizag-Chennai Industrial Corridor will provide the logistic support and IT Investment Region (ITIR), for which a proposal has been submitted to the Centre, will further boost production in electronics units.

The Centre is also expected to fund Rs.150 crore towards creation of infrastructure for EMC. The EMC scheme encourages creation of infrastructure suited to electronics units on a subsidy of 50 per cent. The policy has set a target to record a turnover of Rs.30,000 crore by electronics business by 2020.

An EMC and hardware park has already been sanctioned at Kakinada. Society for Applied Microwave Electronic Engineering and Research, an autonomous R&D lab under DeitY, has been allotted 13 acres at Gambheeram near here to establish a Centre for Electromagnetic Environmental Effects with an investment of Rs.80 crore.
