A programme was organised by the district branch of All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation (AIPSO) here on Monday to mark the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Day on Monday. It was on August 6 and 9 in 1945 that America had dropped bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively.
Addressing the gathering, AIPSO district branch honorary president Devarakonda Markandeyulu said that the bombs were used by America, to test its nuclear power, on the Japanese towns towards the end of World War II. The bombing had killed lakhs of people and colossal loss of property.
It took several decades for the survivors to come out of the after-effects of the bombing. A memorial meet was organised at Hiroshima in 2010 to pay tributes to those who lost their lives in the bombing. People of various countries had participated in the memorial meet but America, which had committed the historical blunder, failed to participate.
Earlier, doves were released to foster peace.
