They might not have a voice but the sign language and the muted cries were as effective in grabbing public attention as that of any of the loud protests that are witnessed in front of the Collectorate almost every day, particularly on a Monday, the public grievances redressal day, when the Collector and district officials receive petitions from member of public.
The silent protest by the Visakha District Association of the Deaf echoed through the corridors of Collectorate and Collector V. Sheshadri agreed to hold a meeting with officials of the departments concerned to look into the long list of demands which remained unsolved for a long time in spite of assurances from the officials.
Association’s general secretary V. Chandra Sekhar and other office-bearers said in a memorandum given to the Collector that the officials have failed to implement the provisions of the Physically Handicapped Act of 1995.
