Greater Visakaha Municipal Corporation Employees’ Union on Monday organised a protest at GVMC questioning the validity of allotting 30 packages of sanitation work comprising 2007 workers to the recognised union.
With workers coming to the protest in good numbers, a large contingent of police personnel, including BSF, were deployed as the protestors laid siege to the office.
CPI(M) state secretariat member Ch. Narsinga Rao, CITU State vice-president A. Ajay Sarma and CPI(M) city secretary B. Ganga Rao who addressed the workers deplored the move of allotting packages.
Municipal Commissioner M. V. Satyanarayana, who was participating in the Rachabanda programme at Bheemunipatnam, asked Additional Commissioner K. Ramesh to hold talks with leaders of the protesting workers.
Union president G. Subba Rao and general secretary Venkat Reddy, who participated in the talks, demanded that the order be withdrawn in three days.
They contended that GOs 581 and 30 were not valid in case of outsourced workers and allotting packages under GO 30 (A) was also not tenable. Also a council resolution was passed on abolishing the packages in September 2010. And no fresh resolution was passed later to give packages to the recognised union, they pointed out.
Also the PF and ESI amount between 2007 and 2009 was not credited to the workers’ accounts, they said.
They said the 8.5 per cent commission to recognised union on the monthly salary worked out to be a huge amount and wanted it to be cancelled and wages should be paid by continuing the present payment through umbrella organisation.
