GVMC to get Swedish support

Ambassador of Sweden to India Lars-Olof Lindgren has said that Sweden will extend its technological support in areas such as solid waste management, waste to energy, and sewerage treatment to Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation.

Inaugurating a three-day workshop at GVMC here on Tuesday, Mr. Lindgren said following a bilateral agreement with India for long-term collaboration, Sweden was looking at GVMC to take up sustainable development of Visakhapatnam.

The Ambassador said Sweden was extending support to India in other important areas of development such as information technology and education tying up with IT firms and universities.

The Swedish team that is in city to participate in the workshop will extend the necessary technical support to GVMC for sustainable development. The working groups of GVMC constituted with the heads of departments concerned and the Swedish delegation and members of Cities Development Initiative Asia (CDIA) discussed the immediate requirement for revised city development plan (CDP). CDIA Senior Programme Coordinator Balakrishnan Elangovan explained various steps planned for a revised CDP.

Mayor P. Janardhana Rao, who welcomed the delegation, expressed his keen interest in seeking the support of Sweden through various technologies. He hoped that urban development that he had seen during his recent visit to Sweden could be replicated in the city through long-term collaboration between Sweden and India.

Municipal Commissioner B. Ramanjaneyulu said that several global agencies were evincing interest in the development of the city, trying to tap the potential for development.

The Swedish delegation comprises Ludwig Lindstrom of Swedish Energy Agency, Mikael Kullman and Arati Davis of Swedish Project Management, Eric Ronnols of Swedish Waste Management Association, consultants Stefan Dahlgreen and Anders Ellergard and Jan-Olov Vinterhav of CDIA.

Deputy Mayor K. Dorabbai, floor leaders A.J. Stalin and B. Eswaramma, Chief Engineer B. Jayarami Reddy and Additional Commissioners K. Ramesh and P. Purnachandra Rao participated.
