Mayor P. Janardhana Rao inaugurated the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation's annual summer coaching camps for under-16 boys and girls at a function organised at the Swarna Bharati indoor stadium here on Monday.
He urged the children participating in the camps to train hard and bring laurels to the country in future and wanted parents to encourage their children to play games.
Commissioner in-charge S. Krishnamurthy informed that 3,600 pupils from GVMC's 17 high schools and 14 Zilla Parishad high schools in the areas merged in GVMC along with children selected by 20 sports associations would participate in the summer camps being held in 20 disciplines. The campus would be held in 31 centres at GVMC schools and 135 centres of the sports associations.
A large number of children, along with Additional Commissioner P. Purnachandra Rao, Floor Leaders of the Congress, Telugu Desam and CPI (M) B. Bhaskara Rao, Ch. V. Pattabhiram and B. Eswaramma respectively, Member of the Standing Committee G.V. Krishna Rao, chairman of the summer camps committee G.V. Raviraju, several Corporators, Assistant Commissioner B. Sanyasi Naidu, Director of Sports Y. Srinivasa Rao, DEO Jaya Kumari and others were present.
A summer training camp for children, being organised by Sri Ramakrishna Mission, commenced at the Mission premises on Monday with the formal lighting of the lamp by Deputy Inspector General (Visakha Range) Soumya Mishra and chanting of Vedic hymns by Swami Amrutananda Mahraj. Ms. Soumya Mishra commended the Mission for its efforts in promoting spiritual thinking and Indian traditions and culture. A total of 100 children attended along with their parents. Swami Ganeshanand Mahraj explained to the children and their parents about the activities to be taught.
