Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation’s environment-friendly initiative of its staff not using motor vehicles for a day while coming to office was lauded at a summit meeting in Singapore.
Municipal Commissioner B. Ramanjaneyulu, who is participating in a World Cities Summit in Singapore, made a presentation on various measures initiated to fight pollution as well as other steps to ensure smooth traffic flow.
World Cities Summit Mayors’ Forum Chairman and Singapore Minister for National Development and Trade and Industry Lee Yi Shyan stressed the need for opportunities for better living conditions and a compassionate society at the conference on Sunday.
Mr. Ramanjaneyulu’s presentation included the steps taken for parking in cellars, free-left at busy intersections, vehicle-free zones, and creation of hawkers’ zones.
The World Bank had come forward to extend technical and financial assistance to GVMC, he said.
Civic representatives from Asia, Africa, South America, India and Russia, Asian Development Bank, UN Habitat and Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development participated in the conference.
A GVMC team, led by Mr. Ramanjaneyulu, was in Singapore to participate in the conference.
