A GVMC delegation currently on a visit to Sweden has visited the Syvab waste treatment plant in Himmerfjardensverket.

The delegation that included Mayor Pulusu Janardhana Rao and Deputy Mayor K. Dorabbai visited the 140 mld plant, located 55 km away from Stockholm, a GVMC release said. The plant was built in two tunnels and the sewerage pipelines linked to it. The waste from three lakh population and that of industries (equivalent to waste produced by another 50,000 people) is processed through chemical and biological treatment after preliminary sedimentation. The biogas produced from the sludge chamber is used to run motor vehicles. The plant is run by a mere 15 personnel. Sweden has six such plants covering a population of nine lakhs.

Visakhapatnam North MLA Tyanala Vijay Kumar, Additional Commissioner K. Ramesh and HRD Consultant A. Rajendrakrishna were also members of the delegation.
