With a number of associations coming together to flag off a green movement this Vinayaka Chaturthi, the city has been witnessing a series of workshops, awareness campaigns and distribution of chemical-free Ganesh idols for the past few days.

In order to dissuade the devout from dunking of Plaster of Paris idols into rivers and sea during the ‘Ganesh Nimajjanam’, several voluntary organisations and pro-environmental groups have taken concrete measures to bring down pollution content by raising awareness on the use of eco-friendly Ganesh idols among the faithful.

Besides hosting a workshop on clay-making idols for all age groups, GoMax Interactive Services, an advertising company, in association with Radio City and GVMC has embarked on a green journey of distributing a total of 4,000 idols at different junctions across the city. The distribution of free idols will go on for a couple of days, starting August 27. The team can be reached over 9849807666 or 9848078649.

Drawing the attention of the netizens through an online format, Ken Foundation has uploaded a green poster on Facebook. “We want to reach out to our online friends and bring about change with our ‘green’ poster. The idea is to motivate people to take pledge against the use of non-biodegradable Ganesh idols,” says P. Santosh, founder-president of the foundation.

Similarly, adding value to green culture, Wings of Fire Society, another NGO, plans to give away the elephant-headed deities made of clay to the residents of NAD Kotha Road. The list consists of a total of 650 idols (500 medium size clay moulds and 150 big ones), a ten-feet tall sculpture for the colony celebrations along with a few three-feet high idols, all made of clay. Details can be had over 8686995533.

This year, in order to instil green thoughts among the little ones, Minerva Public School is presenting eco-friendly idols to its students across all the branches as Ganesh Chaturthi gift on Thursday.
