It is difficult for the urban local government to set up and operate social infrastructure like a museum, said Commissioner, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, Pravin Kumar.
However, the GVMC is committed to developing social infrastructure and would do everything to develop the institution and promote more activities in it.
The GVMC is trying to get more funds for the development of the museum and increase the conservation activities, he said speaking at the GVMC Visakha Museum at the International Museum Day celebrations here on Wednesday.
The day saw a large turnout of visitors at the Museum. The celebrations were an added reason for the tourists to visit the city museum that was renovated for the second International Fleet Review 2106 in February.
Painting competition
The Visakha Museum organised a painting competition for children to mark the celebrations. Some 37 children, including 14 from municipal schools, participated in the contest that was conducted in two age groups, below 12 years of age and above 12 years of age, Museum Curator MNA Patrudu told The Hindu. Top three paintings from each category were given away prizes. In the evening, activists of INTACH participated in the event.
Jayasree Hatangadi spoke on the importance of heritage and culture of the city and its protection. Rani Sarma spoke on various aspects of the Buddhist sites in and around the city and their conservation.
The common perception that Visakhapatnam was a fishing village and was developed by the British is not true. There is enough evidence to show that it was a well developed trading port in the 11{+t}{+h}century, Edward Paul of INTACH said giving a presentation on the development of the city.
