Good news for green thumbs

Facebook, Twitter accounts opened to enable people to upload details of saplings they planted

The government is considering granting additional marks for the green initiatives of students and also preference in employment, Minister for BC Welfare K. Ravindra has said.

Speaking after launching ‘Vanam Manam’ at Kambalakonda Eco-Tourism Park here on Friday, the Minister emphasised the importance of community participation in greening of the State.

The green initiative, ‘Haritandhrapradesh’, being taken up in a mission mode aimed at increasing the forest cover to 50 per cent, he said. “The district is aiming at planting 20 lakh trees as part of the programme that is taken up annually through the rainy season. Shifting from an annual symbolic affair to a mission mode underscores the importance of the project,” District Collector Pravin Kumar said. With a view to promoting public participation in the programme, Facebook and Twitter accounts had been opened. Green enthusiasts can upload the details of the saplings they planted and adopted.

‘Apt person to be brand ambassador’

To create a public image, Additional Principal Conservator of Forests Pratheep Kumar suggested that Mr. Pravin Kumar be the brand ambassador.
