Students of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of GITAM University put on display smart energy saving systems and several gadgets using solar energy, all designed by them at an exhibition organised on the campus as part of the Energy Conservation Day programmes held on Wednesday.
The students presented live models like smart energy saving systems, hybrid combination of solar and wind power tracking, a solar car using micro-controllers, storage of solar energy using super capacitors, solar cell phone charger, micro controller-based solar charge controller, intelligent solar tracking and other gadgets and equipment.
Super capacitors
Solar energy is stored in super capacitors for future usage and super capacitors have an advantage over normal capacitors and batteries as they do not get discharged while not being used, the students explained. They also made a solar car using microcontroller.
Later the EEE students, members of the Institution of Engineers (India) student chapter and students from Department of Biotechnology participated in a rally on energy conservation. The students raised slogans like “save energy, conserve energy for a better tomorrow”.
Principal of Institute of Technology D. Prasada Rao inaugurated the exhibition. While appreciating the students for developing energy-saving devices, he urged the students to study alternative energy sources and prepare new designs particularly on green technologies to serve the nation. HoD of EEE K.S. Lingamurthy, HoD of biotechnology R.K. Sinha, faculty coordinators G. Saraswatthi, T. Padmavathi and Y. Rambabu and others participated in the programme.
‘Conserve energy'
APEPDCL CMD Ahmad Nadeem has said that power tariff can be brought down by conserving energy. Participating in the concluding meeting of the National Energy Conservation Week here, he said power charges would go up if energy conservation was not given due priority.
APEPDCL Director (Operations) H.Y. Dora and Director (Finance) P. Hari Prasad spoke. Prizes were distributed to winners in the competitions held on the topic of energy conservation.
