CITU general secretary and CPI (M) MP Tapan Sen on Wednesday asked CITU activists to establish good rapport with grassroots level workers.
In his inaugural address at the three-day working committee meeting of CITU-affiliated Steel Workers' Federation of India (SWFI) at Ukkunagaram, he said unity at the top would not sustain without the support of workers at the grassroots.
Mr. Sen said price rise was a created phenomena and it could be checked if the workers have a clear understanding of the issue and come forward to bring pressure on the government. He asked the CITU activists to get in touch with members of rival unions and also explain to them on their organisation's programmes and policies.
Overcome shortcomings
The veteran trade union leader said the TU leaders should be in a position to identify their shortcomings and adopt strategies to overcome them.
He also predicted that the steel industry was set to grow in a big way in the private sector and there was an urgent need to involve the contract workers in the mainstream activity of the trade unions.
“If we give a call for a strike in a steel plant, it won't be successful without the wholehearted support of contract workers. Hence, they have to be integrated with the mainstream regular workers,” he opined.
SWFI general secretary P.K. Das, CITU State vice-president Ch. Narsinga Rao, Orissa president Vishnu Mohanty, West Bengal president Ajit Mukherjee, Tamil Nadu secretary R. Singarvelu, CITU leaders J. Ayodhyaram, V. Dhanaraju and N. Rama Rao were present.
