Principal of Andhra University College of Arts and Commerce K. Gayatri Devi has been appointed new rector of Andhra University.

Gayatri Devi, professor in the Sanskrit Department, has become the first woman Rector of Andhra University in the nine-decade history of the university.

This decision was taken at the Executive Council meeting of Andhra University held under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor G. Nageswara Rao here on Friday. Decisions were also taken to issue a fresh notification on filling up of backlog vacancies in the ‘Non-Teaching’ category and to hold 85th convocation during December this year or January 2018. The council decided to merge the Education Department and the IASE (Institute of Advanced Studies in Education) and form the ‘School of Education’.

Sub panels formed

The council also discussed on G.O. 167 and the two reports released by the State government recently. A decision was taken to appoint Sub Committees on 10 issues mentioned in the G.O. Based on the findings of the committees, a decision would be taken, after a final discussion at the next EC meeting.

The Department of Higher Education has issued a G.O. after enquiry report was submitted by an enquiry commission, suggesting certain actions for the alleged irregularities committed by the former Vice-Chancellor GSN Raju.

According to the report, the former Vice Chancellor had made certain irregularities in filling up of a large number of posts in teaching, non-teaching categories and guest faculty. The report stated that Prof. Raju reportedly neglected the roster, rule of reservations, presidential orders and UGC guidelines. Even the Ph.D. admissions given under “Executive Quota” were in violation of norms.
