Like tiny specks of floating marvel, scores of kites dotted the clear blue sky on Thursday at the Kite Festival held as part of the Visakha Utsav. Organised by VUDA and Rotary and Rotaract Clubs of Visakhapatnam, the festival saw school and college students and families participating in large numbers.

For many, it was their first experience in kite flying.

“It feels like a carnival here. My first try with kite flying was an exciting experience,” said Chandni Chowdhary, a member of the Rotaract Club of GITAM University. She had come along with 30 members from the club to participate in the event.

In all, 1,000 kites and threads were distributed free of cost to the participants by the Rotary Clubs. The festival was organised to involve the youth in the traditional festival of kite flying. A spirit of camaraderie prevailed at the venue with the participants enjoying the spirit of the festival.

Minister Ganta Srinivas Rao inaugurated the festival. Visakhapatnam South MLA Vasupalli Ganesh Kumar, VUDA Vice-Chairman T. Baburao Naidu, and Rotarians Rotarians M. Ramjee and P.L.K. Murthy were present.

One of the major attractions of the Utsav will be the Laser Show to be held atop Kailasagiri on Friday. Visitors can savour delicacies from a variety of food stalls at R.K. Beach from Friday.

As part of the Utsav, Hotel Akshaya is organising a ‘Dosa Mela’ at its restaurant from January 23 to 26. The mela will be open from 6 p.m. to 10.30 p.m.
