Fighter cock in the cell!

While organisers of cockfight are out on bail, the bird is put behind bars, pending trial. Anonymous callers dialled the Police Control Room on ‘100’ and gave tense moments to the police and passengers alike, twice during the past one week.

May 28, 2014 07:33 pm | Updated November 28, 2021 09:10 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

A cock has been confined to a cell, pending trial, at the Sabbavaram police station in the district. What is the crime committed by the poor bird?

It was made to participate in a cockfight by its master.

Interestingly, while the organisers have been given bail by a court, the cock is still languishing in the cell!

On a tip-off, Sabbavaram SI S. Suryaprakasa Rao and his team conducted a raid on May 5 and arrested nine persons on the charge of organising a cockfight. The accused and the cock were produced in court, and the judge posted the case for hearing on June 21.

The accused were given bail on personal bond, but there was no one to plead bail for the fighter cock. The police personnel locked it up in the cell till the next hearing.

“We are putting the bird in the lock-up during nights. But during daytime, it is being kept outside,” Mr. Suryaprakasa Rao said.

Bomb hoax

Passengers travelling by the Visakhapatnam – Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai) Express and the Bhubaneswar – Bangalore Prasanthi Express had a harrowing experience when some pranksters chose to play a dirty trick on them.

The anonymous callers dialled the Police Control Room on ‘100’ and gave tense moments to the police and passengers alike, twice during the past one week.

The Bomb Disposal Squad of the city police, teams from the Government Railway Police, and the Railway Protection Force had to scan all the coaches to rule out the possibility of a bomb.

While the hoax call was received for the Visakhapatnam-LTT Express before the train left the station, in the case of Prasanthi Express, the call was received after the train had left Visakhapatnam, increasing the anxiety of the police who had to rush to Duvvada, about 25 km away, by road.

Both the trains were delayed by about two hours.

But, more importantly, the trauma of the passengers till they reached their destination and the police till they completed their task was inexplicable.

“Anonymous callers were tracked down and punished in the past. We will not spare the culprits. We will bring them to book,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police (GRP) S. Venkata Rao.
