A 55-year-old farmer was killed in a stampede in a queue line at the Union Bank of India branch at Chintapalli in the Agency area of the district on Thursday evening.

The mishap occurred when hundreds of farmers went to the bank to encash the cheques given to them towards compensation for their damaged crop.

The farmers of Chintapalli, GK Veedhi and other mandals in the district had received cheques from the Agriculture Department towards compensation for their damaged crops.

Vanthala Chinnayya, a farmer of Jadumuru village, went to Chintapalli to deposit his cheque on Thursday. There were around 500 farmers, who went to the bank to encash their cheques. He fell down during the stampede and was rushed to a nearby hospital, but he died on the way.

It was alleged that poor arrangements by the bank led to the stampede.
