NSTL products like torpedoes, decoys and fire control systems are being considered for export, according to NSTL Director C. Durga Malleswar.
Addressing the National Technology Day programme at NSTL on Monday, he said India has missed a few earlier technological revolutions that changed the world but should now seize the opportunity to build on engineering automation, nano, micro electric mechanical systems (MEMS) and 3D printing technologies.
National Technology Day is observed to mark the successful nuclear tests on May 11, 1998 making the country a nuclear capable State.
He said the country missed the industrial revolution and semi-conductor revolution with no capacity to manufacture semi-conductor devices.
In automation engineering technology also it had weaknesses, he said citing the example of ISKCON seeking technology from Switzerland for cooking for very large number of people at its facilities at Nellore and Hyderabad. The country should not mind spending around Rs.500 crore to train about 100 engineers in design automation technology in Switzerland or Germany.
Mr. Malleswar expressed concern over reaction time, second strike capability and stressed the need for hardening of assets and responding in a short duration.
On the other hand, there were socio-economic concerns also like mentoring those from poorer backgrounds and urban issues like housing, water supply, solid waste management and pollution. “It’s not a gloomy picture but India has to overcome its inertia,” he observed.
