“Invest now in anti-corrosion paintings and other material and enjoy long.” This was the message of National Association of Corrosion Engineers (India) chairman Samir Degan to prevent threat to the stability of buildings in coastal cities and towns.
During a talk organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and US Consulate General’s office, Hyderabad, he said on Tuesday that salt was the biggest creator of corrosion. “There are some low-cost technologies available. Even if it costs little more, one should not compromise on corrosion control methods.
He gave some insights on anti-corrosion measures and mentioned about various time tested methods for preventing and controlling corrosion depending on the specific material to be protected, environmental concerns such as soil resistance, humidity, and exposure to saltwater or industrial environments.
The most commonly used methods include organic and metallic protective coatings; corrosion resistant alloys, plastics, and polymers; corrosion inhibitors; and cathodic protection.
Dr. Degan highlighted some of the strategies to prevent corrosion. He suggested increasing awareness of significant corrosion costs and potential cost savings, changing the misconception that nothing could be done about corrosion and tax incentives on the lines of the United States to those following anti-corrosion methods.
CII Vizag zone chairman and Visakhapatnam Port Deputy Chairman G.V.L. Satya Kumar said corrosion was a naturally occurring phenomenon commonly defined as the deterioration of a substance - usually a metal - or its properties because of a reaction with its environment.
