Expedition team feted

The expedition team from Eastern Naval Command that successfully unfurled the National Flag and Naval Ensign on the Mt Kamet and Mt Abi Gamin were felicitated here on Wednesday.

The team of 13 mountaineers of the ENC who embarked early in May to set foot on the highest climbable peak in the country Mt Kamet returned home this week after nine members summitted 7756 m high Mt Kamet in Gharwal Himalayas and four summitted above 7000 m Mt Abi Gamin in the Kamet Massif. They were felicitated by Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Naval Command Vice Admiral HCS Bisht on Wednesday.

Mt. Kamet, at 7756 mtrs, the third highest peak in the country is the highest peak that is open to mountaineers in India as Mt. Kanchanjunga and Mt. Nandadevi are prohibited for climbing. It had remained unclimbed for the past eight years from the Southern route.

The expedition was flagged off by Vice Admiral Bisht on April 29 and led by Cdr S Karthikeyan. The other summiteers include Lt Yogesh Tiwari (the deputy leader), Lt BP Upadhyay, Lt Rajinikant Yadav, Lt Anant Kukreti, S Sehrawat CHEAP, Rakesh Kumar CPO, Maharana, RO I and AS Rana, ME I.

The team, assisted by six Sherpas continued their ascent and established five higher camps, with the summit camp at an attitude of 7080 m.
