Contract workers, outsourced and other non-permanent categories in the Electricity Department will launch an indefinite State-wide strike from 6 a.m. on January 27.

A preparatory meeting was held at the CITU office at Jagadamba junction here on Sunday as a prelude to the proposed indefinite strike. Speakers at the meeting called for absorption of all contract workers. The department should pay their salaries directly and the system of contract, outsourcing and ‘piece-rate’ payment of wages should be abolished. They demanded implementation of the ‘equal pay for equal work’ as per the directions of the Supreme Court and payment of a minimum of ₹8,000 a month till the implementation of the Apex court orders. The other demands include payment of ₹20 lakh as compensation when a worker dies on duty, provision of a job to a dependent.
