Drop in temperature triggering cold, cough

There were two things which seem ubiquitous among people at places such as Rythu Bazaars, railway stations, bus stations and even at offices and homes during the past few weeks. They are: cold and cough.

One may dismiss it as a result of the drop in mercury levels. But, there are a number of other factors that are adding up to the woes of the people.

“There will be a lot of moisture in coastal areas and dust particles get trapped in it, particularly during winter. When a person inhales, he/she takes in the dust particles and other pollutants, and this causes nasal and throat irritation, leading to cough and cold,” Suryaprakasa Rao, Professor of ENT, at the Government ENT Hospital (Andhra Medical College), told The Hindu . This apart, pollen allergies, food allergies and dust also cause cough and cold. Those who have inherent allergy should ensure that their rooms and living areas are clean and dust-free.

“Allergic patients should have a separate room with only a single bed devoid of other furniture. The fans should be cleaned regularly. Those who have food allergies should avoid cold drinks, citrus fruits and curd. Any cough, which prevails for long is allergic and should be treated promptly,” says Dr. Suryaprakasa Rao.
