A group of fishermen belonging to Pudimadaka and other areas have launched a fast-unto-death in front of the main gate of Brandix India Apparel City (BIAC) at Atchutapuram near here demanding jobs for those displaced by the project.
The fast, which was launched under the aegis of Matsyakarula Matsya Karmika Sangham and SEZ Nirvasita Samkhema Sangham, entered the second day on Thursday.
Addressing a press conference here, CPI (M) State secretariat member Ch. Narsinga Rao, district secretariat member S. Ramesh, displaced people Chodupalli Appa Rao and T. Ramulamma said the Sri Lankan garment company had failed to generate 60,000 jobs to locals within four years of commencing its operations as per MoU signed with the State Government. Mr. Narsinga Rao and Mr. Ramesh said the management had also failed to keep its promise to provide 3,000 jobs by imparting training — 600 per batch once in six months — to the fishermen of Pudimadaka, after signing an agreement with them in June, 2009.
The CPI (M) leaders appealed to the government to intervene and solve the problem at the earliest.
