January 19, 2012 02:30 pm | Updated October 18, 2016 03:10 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

While reiterating the demand for the release of slum-dwellers and those who led them in connection with the laying siege to GVMC on January 9, POW State president V. Sandhya wanted the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation general body to take up for discussion improvement of slums and providing them housing without affecting their livelihood.

During the five-year term, the elected body has not discussed the lot of the 731 slum-dwellers and the democratic process should be initiated and the people living there should be taken into confidence, she told reporters here on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference along with general secretary Jhansi, she said various slum improvement schemes like housing in JNNURM and Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) were formulated because of the relentless struggle of slum-dwellers to live with dignity and earning their livelihood.

Ms. Sandhya blamed the “attitude” of the Municipal Commissioner.
