One person reportedly died while trying to escape from a raid conducted by the Narsipatnam rural police at Vemulapudi village on Tuesday evening. Eight persons were arrested on the charge of gambling. While the police claim that the person died after falling from a height while trying to escape, the deceased person’s relatives alleged that he died after being beaten by the police.

As per reports, nine persons were indulging in gambling in the village. Based on a tip-off, the police team led by Sub-Inspector Prabhakar Reddy conducted a raid and arrested eight of them. The ninth person, Venkata Ramana, an RMP from KA Mallavaram village of Kotananduru mandal tried to run away and in the anxiety stepped over a false ceiling and fell.

“He suffered severe head injuries in the fall and was admitted to Narsipatnam area hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries,” said Narsipatnam ASP B.S. Yesubabu.
