P. Shiva Shankar, a 35-year-old man, suffering from a rare congenital anomaly, known as ALCAPA (Anomalous Left Coronary Artery from the Pulmonary Artery), where the left coronary artery originates from pulmonary artery, instead of from the aorta base was successfully operated at Apollo Hospitals here.

The complex surgery lasted for over 10 hours and was done by senior cardio-thoracic surgeons Dr. Jaideep Kumar Trivedi and Dr. Sujit Kumar Mohanty. There are no records in the medical literature of this surgery being performed anywhere in the world, according to a statement issued by the hospital.

After 15 days of hospitalisation, he is normal and was discharged a few days ago.

The incidence of ALCAPA is extremely rare, i.e., 1 in 3 lakh live births and constitutes just about 0.25 % to 0.5% of all cases of congenital heart diseases.
