Work on widening of roads for the Bus Rapid Transit System is causing several hardship to residents.
The stretch between CMR Central and Rama Talkies has been seeing a lot of activity with the road going through a number of phases. As a part of it, the road was dug up opposite Swarnabharati Indoor Stadium at New Resapuvanipalem and drains formed. The drains, however, were left open at some stretches and water has been stagnant there. It has been at least two months since the completion of the work but the gaping holes remained.
In the first place, it hampered entry into the lane near it to the residents. Two persons fell into it and one got his hand injured.
Drain water remained stagnant apparently providing a happy breeding ground for mosquitoes. As a result, a few days ago two teenage persons suffered from cerebral malaria, according a resident.
The GVMC officials took remedial measures and collected blood samples from others living in the area.
If the stretch of the drain can't be closed for some reason what with the BRTS work going on and on, simple anti-larvae measures would have saved a lot of trouble for residents and later for the GVMC as well.
