The non-executive staff of the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) went on strike from Wednesday morning for three days in protest against the move of the Union government to take up 100% strategic sale of equity in the PSU.

The employees along with members and trade union leaders from other PSUs in Visakhapatnam participated and took an unanimous decision to stand united on the issue.

Employee’s suicide

“We will continue our agitation and if required, scale it up to the State and national levels and will not allow the privatisation of the DCI.

The privatisation of the DCI will open up the gates for sale of equity in other PSUs such as RINL and we will not let that happen,” said Ch. Narasinga Rao, State Secretariat member of the CPI (M).

The employees of the DCI have been agitating for quite some time against the move and one employee in the HR department, N. Venkatesh, committed suicide in protest against the move and expressing apprehension about his future.

In November, the DCI non-executive Staff Association served a strike notice on the management.

The executive staff also went on strike in solidarity with the non-executive staff. The DCI was set up here in 1976.

On Tuesday, Anakapalle MP Muttamsetti Srinivasa Rao, and YSRC MP Vijai Sai Reddy raised the issue separately in Parliament.
