Curious wait for exit polls to end

Central Election Commission’s clearance for making public the results of exit polls after conclusion of the last phase of elections on Monday has generated lot of excitement with many welcoming the decision on the social media.

However, State Election Commission has extended restriction on exit polls in Andhra Pradesh till May 13.

“End of speculation,” stated one of the comments. Another said “indications that will suggest on government formation at the Centre.”

Sources said the projections to be available from the exit poll results conducted by various newspapers, TV channels and research agencies might also increase the pace of betting.

Betting spree

Already several crores of rupees are being invested in favour of those considered hot favourite for emerging as winners. The results of Assembly and Lok Sabha elections will start trickling down from the morning of May 16 – when the electronic voting machines will be opened for counting. As time of counting after elections is very long, several candidates have gone on vacation to holiday resorts to ‘while away time’ after slogging it out for several days in electioneering.

YSR Congress and BJP-TDP combine are confident of a clear majority for them in the Assembly as well as Lok Sabha constituencies.
