Each individual should take the responsibility to conserve the earth and save energy. Ozone depletion, global warming, climatic conditions, pollution, wastage of natural resources along with other factors cause havoc to our mother earth, said former chairman of Bar Council of India D.V. Subba Rao.
He was addressing participants at ‘Poster design contest' for school students held on the occasion of 42 Earth Day at Andhra University here on Sunday. The event was organised by ESSAR Steel Ltd., in association with The Hindu to create awareness on nature's protection and pass on its values to the future generations. The theme of the contest was global warming.
Around 300 students took part in designing the posters using water colours, crayons and sketches. Thought-provoking slogans were written in the posters along with the theme such as ‘Global warming is increasing, act before it is too late', ‘Save earth- stop global warming', ‘Save earth - save our environment', ‘Control pollution and control emission', etc.
The contest was for two categories — Classes V, VI and VII juniors, and classes VIII, IX and X seniors. Head of the Department of Fine Arts, Andhra University Sistla Srinivas was the judge. Certificates were given away to all the participants.
Winners
In junior category, A. Sowmika of Timpany School, Vishnupriya Vijay of Kendriya Vidyalaya - SVN Colony, and G. Shanmukh of Sri Prakash Vidyaniketan got the first, second and third prizes respectively and the consolation prize winners were Haritapriya Vijay of Kendriya Vidyalaya, C.H. Harshavardhan of SFS School and Bhogi Dileep of Quincy School.
Souham Mandal of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Malkapuram, Ameer Sohail Khan of Sanskruti Global School and R. Amar Hari Kumar of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Waltair bagged the first, second and third prizes respectively among seniors. R. Sindhuja of Visakha Valley School, M. Satya Deepya of Siva Sivani Public school and G. Ravi Teja of Ravindra Bharati School won consolation prizes.
Saplings were offered to all the students which were contributed by conservator of forest K. Suryanarayana and DFO K. Lohitasyudu.
Five ‘R's
“Global warming is a threat in today's world. One needs to remember five ‘R's-reduce, reuse, recycle, restore and replenish while protecting the mother earth and conserve energy,” said ESSAR Steel Head K. Bhaktavatsalam.
“Carbon dioxide emission is the highest in India and it's high time we conserved our earth by planting more trees,” said Joint Chief Environmental Engineer of AP Pollution Control Board K.V. Rao.
