CPI(M) opposes deadline to allottees

August 12, 2011 01:23 pm | Updated 01:23 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

The Communist Party of India(Marxist) has condemned the attitude of the government in warning displaced persons that the plots allotted to them would be taken back, if they do not construct houses within three months.

CPI(M) district committee secretary Ch. Narasinga Rao termed as ‘unfortunate' the statement of Joint Collector M. Girija Shankar that the allotted plots would be taken back if the beneficiaries do not construct houses. He warned that the government would have to face severe consequences if it acts against the interests of the displaced persons.

He noted that the government had acquired thousands of acres from farmers in the district for the setting up Pharma City, SEZ (Atchutapuram), Naval Alternative Operating Base (NAOB) and other industries. The process of acquisition of land was continuing. He said identity cards were not issued to the displaced persons of Atchutapuram SEZ though the land was acquired from them seven years ago.

The agreement to provide jobs to those displaced by the Gangavaram Port has not been implemented. He alleged that the government was pressuring the villagers of Revu Vathada to vacate the village for the NAOB. The power supply to the village was cut off and rations were stopped for several months, he alleged. The fishermen have lost their livelihood and were not in a position to build houses with the meagre amounts sanctioned by the government.

Mr. Narasinga Rao demanded that the State government should initiate measures to ensure that the beneficiaries were given adequate compensation.
