CPI (M) seeks probe into 2003 deal with GPL

February 05, 2015 05:09 pm | Updated July 20, 2016 05:40 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

CPI (M) city unit has decided to submit a memorandum to Public Accounts Committee Chairman Bhuma Nagi Reddy during its visit to the city on Friday seeking a probe into alleged irregularities committed by the undivided Andhra Pradesh Government in signing concession agreement with Gangavaram Port Limited in 2003.

The committee is slated to receive petitions from the public and civil society at the Circuit House. It has local MLC M.V.S. Sarma and MLA P. Vishnu Kumar Raju and P.G.V.R. Naidu as members.

Stating that the agreement was a ‘big fraud,’ CPI (M) city secretary B. Ganga Rao told reporters here on Thursday that among 10 bidders only two, GPL and Adani Group, were short-listed for consideration. “Of 2,400 acres given in custody of GPL which developed a port at Gangavaram on the city outskirts, the project proponent mortgaged the land documents to banks for an amount of Rs.1,170 crore without seeking consent of the State Government,” he said.

According to Mr. Rao, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India found fault with the Government for allowing several deficiencies in the concession agreement. Asking the Government to scrap the deal and run the port on its own, he said that the cancellation of notification to develop a minor port at Mutyalammapalem, close to Gangavaram was made by the Government to favour the GPL.
