Every person should be aware of the Consumer Awareness and Consumer Protection Act and know their rights to avoid any kind of exploitation and fight for justice in case they find anything wrong with the goods they have bought, said Senior Civil Judge and District Legal Services Authority secretary K. Surya Rao.
Addressing the students at a seminar on consumer and legal awareness organised by Oxford Talent School in association with Consumer Protection Council on Tuesday, Mr. Surya Rao said the subject should be taught in all the schools.
“Ignorance leads to exploitation. If you are aware of the rights available and understand the Law, it will be easy to follow legal protocol during emergencies. Keeping abreast of the rules and regulations help one tackle any kind of situation and handle issues with ease,” he said.
He gave away booklets covering various topics such as Consumer Protection Act, human rights, cyber crime, Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, Right to Information Act, and Right to Education, among others to Principal of the school P. Ananda Rao.
‘Legal aid club’
He also advocated ‘legal aid club’ at the school where a group of four representatives (three students and one teacher) work as a team to help address all sorts of legal matters through DLSA. “The petition can be handed to any of these representatives and the issue will be looked into by DLSA,” he added.
Senior sales officer of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited M. Babji presented a live demonstration on how to use LPG while cooking and briefed about the safety measures to be followed during emergencies.
Secretary of Consumer Protection Council P.K. Lingeswara Rao, president in-charge of District Consumer Forum K.V.R. Maheswari and member of District Legal Services Authority L.V. Ramani participated in the programme.
