Residents of Srinivasa Nagar say a lot of their problems are addressed by GVMC
For the last one year, residents of Srinivasa Nagar have been waking up to a new dawn. With yoga gradually gaining prominence among fitness freaks, the colony people meet every morning to practise yoga asanas followed by a few minutes of meditation.
The community hall that was in a state of grievous disrepair post cyclone Hudhud is not only up and ready but also unites the health conscious through daily yoga classes held free of cost.
In 2014, the residents of the neighbourhood at Old Akkayyapalem, poured out their woes as the civic administration failed to address majority of their perennial problems including lack of proper roads and drains. Today, the residents narrate a different tale.
“After approaching GVMC officials persistently followed by a report published in The Hindu dated 15 November, 2014, the signs of progress finally began to show.
The electric pole that was uprooted due to the severe cyclonic storm a couple of years back has been rectified. This apart, the civic administration has laid concrete roads and drains in the colony,” explains R. Ramana Rao, president of Srinivasa Nagar Colony Residents Welfare Association, taking stock of the recent development. The other combined initiatives taken up by the GVMC and colony association include planting 200 saplings with tree guards across the lanes, clearing the approach road which was earlier a litter-strewn stretch and bringing a dysfunctional community hall back to its original shape. With an intention to de-congest the vehicular traffic, especially to streamline parking woes, the association members are planning to provide a new parking space for autorickshaws.
“In addition to this, a vacant area in the locality will be readied to organise colony get-togethers. This helps in steering clear of traffic snarls to the possible extent,” says B.A. Reddy, a colony resident. On April 8, the residents plan to celebrate Ugadi in a big way by organising rangoli contest, session on maintaining health and hygiene and prize distribution ceremony.
