CM urges Centre to set up NIRTS in Vizag

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has requested the Centre to set up the proposed National Institute of Road and Transport Safety (NIRTS) in Visakhapatnam.

The Chief Minister held a meeting with Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari here on Friday to discuss with him the plans for development of roads and ports in Andhra Pradesh.

Land identified

Mr. Chandrababu Naidu said the land required for the establishment of the NIRTS has already been identified in the city.

AP Transport Commissioner N. Balasubrahmanyam gave a PowerPoint presentation on the steps being taken in the State to bring down the road accidents in the State.

AP was registering 6 per cent of the total road accidents in the country. One out of two road accident victims in the country were earning members in their families. He explained about the plan of action proposed by the Transport Department under AP Road Safety Initiatives for reducing road accidents and accident deaths.

An amount of Rs.3,500 crore to Rs.4,000 crore would be required for control of road accidents on 15,000 km of State roads in AP.

The Chief Minister said objective of the State government was to provide a trauma care centre for every 100 km in the State by 2020 and to reduce road accidents by 50 per cent by 2025.
