Even as the much-awaited master-plan for the modification and remodelling of Indira Gandhi Zoological Park appears to take a bit longer to take shape, the zoo will soon don a fresh look with the State Government sanctioning ₹1 crore for carrying out immediate repairs and refurbishments.

Officials say that the works will be completed by the May-end, if everything goes well.

“As part of the renovation works, the main entrance gate will get a facelift with murals and paintings, apart from 17 pagodas getting renovated. The sit-outs at the zoo will also be improved and animal enclosures will be given a fresh coat of red oxide paints,” Chief Conservator of Forest Rahul Pandey told The Hindu .

Every enclosure will get fresh signage. This apart, the zoo officials have also hired a team to carry out landscaping works at the circular road junction near the entrance.

The sideways of the paths leading to enclosures will also be given a fresh coat of paint. The canteen renovation is also under way.

To give uniformity to all animal enclosures, the stand-off barriers will be painted with a uniform colour.

“From next month onwards, Vizag zoo will be in top shape and visitors will be able to enjoy an enhanced experience,” Mr Pandey. said. The zoo has recently hiked the entry fees and charges for all other facilities inside the zoo.

Master plan

Speaking about the Detailed Project Report (DPR) under the World Bank funded AP Disaster Recovery Project (APDRP), Mr. Pandey said that the World Bank had agreed with most parts of the document.

“There are a few areas which need to be modified and the World Bank team will be provide us with their inputs. It will take another six months for the work on the master plan to begin,” he added. Under the APDRP, ₹36 crore has been allocated to the zoo park for carrying out redevelopment work.
