Chiko died of cardiac failure on Wednesday.

Chiko, the 21-year-old male chimpanzee, died in the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, here on Wednesday. Zoo sources said the chimpanzee had died of myocardial infraction (cardiac failure).

The zoo had three chimpanzees, and they are now left with two — the mother chimp and Chiko’s sister Chikita.

The chimpanzees had come to the zoo from a zoo in Israel in 2016 and attract good number of visitors.

It may be recalled that both Chiko and Chikita escaped from the 20-foot-high wall of their day kraal enclosure in April 2017. With great difficulty the zoo authorities were able to capture the siblings.
