Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday said the government was planning to install CCTV cameras in all major cities and towns to reduce crime rate and keep a tab on entry and exit points.
Inaugurating the Traffic Command Control Centre developed in the newly built Police Commissionerate here, he said increased CCTV coverage would ensure better security surveillance. He said to cover all the lanes and bylanes criss-crossing the city, they would need over 1500 CCTV cameras.
He said they would ensure that that there would be round-the-clock surveillance of the city through comprehensive mapping so as to reduce traffic offences and timely detection of crime through video footage captured by the surveillance cameras.
The Chief Minister later interacted with the sanitation workers and some visitors thronging the R.K. Beach Road through the system enabled through a mobile app. Deputy Chief Minister China Rajappa, Director-General of Police J.V. Ramudu were among those present at the function.
The Chief Minister directed Mr. Garg, District Collector N. Yuvaraj and other officials to finalise a detailed report on installation of over 1,500 CCTV cameras in the city.
He also launched the official website of the city policewww.vizagcitypolice.gov.in. The website was developed by M.G. Chandrasekhar of National Informatics Centre-Hyderabad.
The Traffic Command Control Centre is equipped with a video wall of 1250-inch LED monitors. There is plan to integrate with 160 cameras including 47 high-definition pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ)) cameras mounted at 47 traffic junctions.
The high-definition cameras will have effective range of about 500 metres. They will have vipers to handle rain.
According to Commissioner of Police Amit Garg, 160 more cameras will be installed in 47 areas in the city in the next phase phase. He said the Traffic Command Control Centre would have a provision to store recorded data for around 90 days.
Vehicle tracking system would be installed to catch traffic offenders, he disclosed.
Later Prakash of Stanpower, the Hyderabad-based firm that installed the cameras and developed the Traffic Command Control Centre under BOT scheme, told the Chief Minister said total coverage of the city by surveillance cameras would need a minimum investment of Rs. 50 crore and promised to explore using AP Fiber Grid project for better coverage.
