Several people’s organisations, struggle committees and political parties are organising a Chalo Visakha programme on June 25 during which a rally followed by a public meeting would be held to protest against the alleged moves to suppress agitations against destructive development.
A poster on the rally and public meeting was released near the Gandhi statue opposite GVMC main office building here on Wednesday. Among those present were T. Sreerama Murthy of the APCLC, M. Lakshmi of the POW, Y. Kondaiah of CPI (ML-ND), P.V. Ramana of Struggle Committee Against Privatisation, M. Pydiraju and D. Markendeyulu of the CPI, J.V. Ratnam of Movement for People-Centred Development, K. Ravi of Slumdwelleres Welfare Association, K.S. Chalam of Coastal Corridor Vytireka Committee and S.V. Ramana of Dalita Vimukti. Large-scale destruction of natural resources, pollution of land, water and air was taking place due to setting up of industries, acquisition of fertile lands, leading to lakhs of people losing their livelihood. There was no relief to the people but the Government, instead of stopping the destruction, launched attacks on those fighting the cause of people, said the organisations. It was decided to organise a rally from the Railway station to the Gandhi statue and hold a public meeting at 5 p.m. , the organisations added.
