How judiciously we use power is important, as demand for power is on the rise and sustainability of growth in all sectors depends on it, CEO of State Energy Conservation Mission A. Chandrasekhar Reddy has said.

After addressing a meeting of the district-level Energy Conservation Committee here on Saturday during which the power situation was explained and methods to save power listed, Mr. Reddy told reporters that it was the social responsibility of every citizen to save power.

The State’s generation capacity is 16,334 MW. But only 10,500 MW was available due to non-availability of fuel (coal, natural gas, and adequate level of water in reservoirs) to generate power. The situation was same all over the country, except in a few places.

Hence, the need was to complete the ongoing power projects, adopt non-conventional power such as solar, and save energy.

A campaign was being taken up to make people understand the need to conserve power, he said. A committee headed by the CMD of APEPDCL in 2011 on saving power said that 15,000 million units of power could be saved, which was Rs.7,500 crore in monetary value. Hence, it was decided to spread the message.

He appreciated Visakhapatnam for taking up a lot of initiatives to conserve power. The district could lead the others in this aspect, he said.

Collector V. Sheshadri said installation of solar power system at the Collectorate and VUDA complexes would be explored with the help of the EPDCL so that other departments would follow suit.

Campaign

A campaign would be taken up targeting schools, colleges, PSUs, major complexes, and industry to save power.

The district-level committee would recommend to the State committee to ban use of assembled motor pump sets since they consume more power and insist on use of star rated electrical appliances, which consume less power.

Energy Auditor R.V. Ramana Rao made a PowerPoint presentation to the officials on conserving energy.
