Widening of roads and construction of new flyovers and subways are essential to overcome the growing traffic problems in the city, speakers at the executive committee meeting of the BJP Visakhapatnam Maha Nagar unit have said.
The meeting organised on Saturday adopted various resolutions on the problems pertaining to the city and decided to exert pressure on the GVMC to overcome them.
The meeting sought, among other things, completion of the Akkayyapalem – Simhachalam 60-ft road that was stopped at NSTL and the 60-ft road from MVP Colony – Seethammadhara – Marripalem R&B junction that narrowed down at Kailasapuram. The bottlenecks should be cleared and this road should be widened into a 100-ft road.
The meeting also demanded construction of flyovers at NAD junction, Maddilapalem junction, and Gajuwaka on a war-footing to overcome frequent traffic congestions.
Lack of subways is causing hardship to pedestrians and motorists. The problem is compounded at four-road junctions. Students, women, and senior citizens are facing problems while crossing the road at the railway station, RTC complex, Jagadamba junction, NAD junction, and Gajuwaka due to heavy traffic flow right from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Similarly, they are also finding it difficult to cross the 100-ft BRTS roads in the absence of subways.
Develop parks
The meeting resolved that it was the responsibility of the GVMC to develop parks and greenery in various colonies and areas. The maintenance of parks was handed over to the residents’ welfare association and many of them were not maintaining them properly due to funds constraint and other reasons. They also demanded development of a big park between NAD junction and Pendurthi for the benefit of people residing in that part of the city.
The meeting also sought full-fledged working of all Aadhaar centres in all wards in the city to ensure that all citizens get the cards. The legislation that all educational institutes should allocate 25 per cent of seats to the poor was not being implemented. The education authorities should ensure its implementation, the meeting opined.
The Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), the prestigious project that was launched with a lot of fanfare, has not been completed to this day.
The BJP expressed its resentment at the “indifference” of the State government and demanded its immediate completion.
