The district units of Bharatiya Janata Party and CPI in separate representations to Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari, demanded separate railway zone with Visakhapatnam as headquarters, failing which Waltair railway division should be merged with the South Central Railway.
While the CPI headed by its district unit secretary J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy pinned black badges to passengers to drive home the party's demand, the BJP led by city unit president, M. Nagendra greeted with placards Ms. Purandeswari, who formally flagged off the Visakhapatnam-Mumbai bi-weekly express at the Visakhapatnam railway station here on Wednesday.
Pointing out the popularity of the trains and the demand by the pilgrims, Mr. Satyanarayana Murthy wanted the Shirdi Express to be made a regular train.
He also wanted introduction of special trains to connect places of tourist importance. The BJP on the other hand demanded setting up of the proposed wagon manufacturing factory at Visakhapatnam. The party also demanded steps for ensuring halts of important trains at Visakhapatnam. Many important trains skip Visakhapatnam station, the BJP pointed out. Copies of the representation had been submitted to the General Manager of ECoR and the Waltair Divisional Railway Manager.
