The Bharatiya Janata Mahila Morcha has demanded a ban on Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad’s novel Draupadi for insulting women at large by his portrayal of Draupadi and cancel the Central Sahitya Academy award announced for it.

At a press conference here on Wednesday, BJMM State general secretary K. Raja Kumari and State executive member K.Pavani alleged that the novel was written with a commercial motive. They reminded that the author penned other books and he could have continued with his literary work and produced good literature through which also he could have made money.

While admitting that she did not read the book, Ms. Rajakumari said the content doing the rounds was enough for impressionable youth to persist with ways that were a result of negative impact of today’s films and portrayal of woman in media as an object of pleasure.

Questioning how Dr. Lakshmi Prasad had come to know what went on in the mind of Draupadi on various occasions, Ms.Rajakumari wondered whether she had narrated it in his dreams.

Explanation sought

Opposing its translation into various other languages, the two said Dr. Lakshmi Prasad owed an explanation to women for his descriptions which ‘shamefully’ went into minute details.

The BJMM would take it to the notice of its all-India leaders and launch a movement opposing the book.
