A special team from the Two Town Police Station, led by inspector Ch. Venkat Rao, has arrested a person in connection with the sensational case of snatching a cash bag registered on July 31 this year.

Two persons wearing helmets and riding a motorcycle (bearing registration number 6184) had snatched a cash bag containing Rs.5 lakh from Ch. Subrahmanyam at Jail Road, after he had come out of the main branch of the State Bank of India. At that time, the victim was accompanied by his daughter-in-law Ch. Srivali.

Thereafter, the accused were charged with committing a similar crime in Guntur.

Since then the Two Town police and their counterparts in Guntur had been on the trail of the accused. After going clueless for a few weeks, they stumbled upon a vital clue.

A motorcycle bearing a similar number was found abandoned at the Vijayawada Railway Station. And that led the police team to an obscure village called Zorabganj in Katihar district of Bihar.

The police said that the gang comprised three persons. The police were able to arrest only one and a hunt was launched to nab those at large.

The arrested person was identified as Shiv Kumar Yadav.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) S. Varada Raju said that the village with a population of hardly 1,000 people was full of gangs that indulged in a variety of crimes.

“This gang specialises in cash bag snatching. The modus operandi of its members is to sit in the bank for a couple of hours and wait for the prospective victim. They preferably target a woman or an old man, and one who withdraws good amount of cash. They would then swoop on the victim after he or she leaves the bank,” he said.

The accused had brought the motorcycle from Bihar, but the chassis number had given them away.

Of the Rs. 5 lakh that was snatched in the Visakhapatnam case, the police could recover Rs.1.38 lakh from the arrested person.
